We had been to Marina d’Or before when we cycled there from Benicassim half an hour down the road but it was a bit of a long cycle ride. This time we planned to stay in Oropesa so that we could walk or cycle in a bit easier and visit the town in the evening as we had heard that the town was lit up at night. There were so many lights, in fact, it was a bit like Blackpool Illuminations. (See the photos below). We visited on a Saturday when they had the brightly lit floats come down the main drag at 10 pm followed by fireworks.
Marina d’Or is a holiday village situated on the Costa Azahar, in the province of Castellion in Valencia. It is spread out across the towns of Oropesa del Mar and Cabanes. There are so many new apartments in this area and I read that a few years ago the developer went bankrupt although Spain’s economy is now starting to bounce back. The area has developed into one of the most important tourist resorts in Spain.
We particularly liked the stunning landscaped gardens which have plants imported from all over the world. They are absolutely beautiful as you can see from the photos. We found peacocks wandering around the gardens and large koi carp in the streams.
The whole of the Marina d’Or area is full of shiny sparkly mosaics which they have put on absolutely everything, seats, walls, balcony’s of some of the hotels, kerbstones, plant pots – it really does look lovely.
There are plenty of excellent bars, shops, restaurants, plus a medical centre, bank, post office etc. The resort boasts luxury spa facilities, squash, golf, football and basketball facilities. There is a water sports centre where you can participate in a host of sports such as sailing windsurfing, kayaking, jet skis, scuba diving and beach games.
The area is great for children they even have shops aimed at children and children’s café (little child size seats), Fantasy World Zone, adventure park, water park, bouncy castles and a three-level playground area for younger children. It is also situated along a lovely stretch of sandy beach.
The resort has plenty of self-catering apartments and hotels to suit all budgets from three to five star. Have a look at Expedia UK
It’s in a great location set between the cities of Valencia and Barcelona and just an hour’s drive from Valencia airport. The whole coastline is steeped in history and tradition.
Our next stop is Benicassim which is another of our favourites. This place is well known amongst festival goers in the UK as in July they host a big music festival.
